Roulette Outside Bets, Without the Hype

A plain-English guide to red/black, odd/even, dozens, columns, and what the wheel's zero means for every wager.

Outside bets cover large groups of numbers. They hit more often than a single-number wager, but pay less. The tradeoff is simple: frequency changes, not the casino’s underlying advantage.

Even-money bets

Red/black, odd/even, and 1–18/19–36 pay 1:1. On a European wheel, 18 of the 37 pockets win. The green zero is why the probability is slightly below 50%.

Dozens and columns

These bets cover 12 numbers and pay 2:1. Again, zero is not included. A winning result is less frequent than an even-money bet, with a correspondingly larger payout.

European versus American roulette

A single-zero European wheel has 37 pockets. A standard American wheel has 38 because it adds double zero. That extra pocket raises the house edge on most wagers, so the single-zero game is generally the better choice.

No sequence of previous spins changes the odds of the next spin on a fair wheel. Use outside bets because you prefer their pace and volatility—not because a color is “due.”

Roulette is entertainment with negative expected value. Decide your limit in advance and stop when you reach it.
